Day 74 and 75 Oamaru

Publicado: 19.01.2019

So... finally back on the road!

We took it slow and first explored a small peninsula in the idyllic town of Karitane. We found amazing rock arches, had a wonderful view of the bay, and watched a heron hunting a lizard. After Basti finished swinging at the playground ('Whee'), we headed to Shag Point, a small promontory with natural access to a seal colony, where we could observe them sleeping, sunbathing, fighting, and swimming. In the evening, we visited one of New Zealand's landmarks - the Moeraki Boulders, round quartz/limestone formations with a natural cement coating, just lying on the beach.

The next day was all about Oamaru. We strolled through the Victorian quarter, which Pauline loved with its flags and many little shops. Another highlight was the taste of home, a loaf of real German bread while chatting with a Kiwi. Feeling adventurous, we drove to Bushy Beach, where in the evening we watched 6 yellow-eyed penguins walking to their nests on the beach. And last but not least - when the sun had disappeared completely - we could even admire or at least imagine 10 blue penguins (the smallest penguin species in the world) making their way home in the harbor. (:
