14./15.05. In the Wilderness

Publicado: 18.05.2018

The first two days in the Northern Territories we were in the area of the Mary River at the 'Point Stuart Wilderness Lodge'. That is really in the middle of nowhere, in the jungle. The nearest civilization in the form of a petrol station is about 100 km away. There are the most crocodiles there, about 10,000 only in this region. Even at the smallest puddles, signs indicate that crocodiles live there. Since the rainy season has only recently ended and there are still many puddles and flooded areas, one must reckon with the creatures everywhere. As we were told, there are even some near the lodge. Various signs and reports from the guides about sudden attacks, especially by the extremely aggressive saltwater crocodiles, make the matter very serious. In addition, there are various venomous snakes that, according to the bartender at the lodge, sometimes make it into the pub. That's really comfortable! Before going to bed, I crawl with a flashlight through all corners of the room to check.

Well, you have to like it. From the lodge, we took a little cruise on the Mary River to observe the crocodiles from the water. We followed a sunset safari with the jeep. There were mainly water buffaloes to see.

The lodge itself was very basic...
