The most visited cities in travel reports

Which cities appear most frequently in travel reports? We analyzed all reports that included a city and compared the cities relative to each other—the most frequently mentioned city received an index value of 100. The result is a mix of expected metropolises and surprising stopovers.

Why Sydney and Bangkok are in the lead

The ranking reflects not so much the classic city break as the major travel routes: Sydney is the starting and ending point of almost every trip to Australia and often a weeks-long work and travel stopover. Bangkok is the gateway to Southeast Asia—hardly any backpacking route omits the city. Christchurch (New Zealand tours), Vancouver (Canada road trips), and Cape Town (South Africa) also represent entire travel regions.

The Frankfurt effect: Turnstiles count towards the overall effect

The biggest surprise is Frankfurt in fourth place—ahead of New York and Berlin. The reason: Many travelogues begin on the day of departure. The first entry of a round-the-world trip is often titled "Departure from Frankfurt," the last "Landed again." The same applies, albeit to a lesser extent, to Singapore, which, as a classic stopover destination between Europe and Oceania, benefits doubly: as a stopover and as a destination in its own right. The ranking, therefore, measures not only where people go on city breaks—but where the travel actually takes place.

Data source: all publicly available travel reports on Vakantio with assigned city (as of August 2026). The values are presented as an index relative to the most frequently mentioned city (Sydney = 100); absolute figures are not shown.
