Trip duration: How long travelers actually stay in each country

Guidebooks list attractions, but rarely provide the most honest planning metric: How long do travelers actually stay in a country? For each trip, we measured the time between the first and last report per country and calculated the median. The range extends from over five weeks in New Zealand to three and a half days in Singapore.

New Zealand36.7 days
Australia35.1 days
Canada32.9 days
Colombia31.2 days

Argentina28 days
Peru27.9 days

New Zealand and Australia lead the way with around five weeks – both countries that hardly anyone flies to for a short trip: long journeys, campervan tours, work and travel. South America is strikingly well represented: In Colombia, Argentina, and Peru, travelers typically stay four weeks – those who travel through the Andes do so thoroughly.

At the lower end of the scale, European neighboring countries dominate with classic one- to two-week holidays. Two outliers stand out: Singapore, with three and a half days, is the classic stopover destination—long enough for Marina Bay and hawker food, then it's on to the next stop. And Cambodia, with just under nine days, is usually visited as part of a larger Southeast Asia route: Angkor Wat, perhaps the coast, then on to Vietnam or Thailand.

The rule of thumb from the data: the longer the flight, the longer the stay. For long-haul destinations with a journey time of over ten hours, travelers rarely plan for less than three weeks – a realistic benchmark for your own planning.

Data basis: all publicly available travel reports on Vakantio with travel date and assigned country (as of August 2026). For each trip and country, the time span between the first and last report is measured; the median across all trips is shown. One-day stays and countries with too few trips are excluded. All figures are medians in days, not absolute numbers.

Frequently Asked Questions

In which country do travelers stay the longest?

In New Zealand: The median stay is just under 37 days, closely followed by Australia with just over 35 days. Both countries are visited almost exclusively for long tours or working holiday programs.

How long should you plan for a trip to South America?

The data suggests around four weeks per country: In Colombia, the median is 31 days, in Argentina 28, and in Peru 28 days. Those planning to combine several Andean countries should allow correspondingly more time.

Why is the value for Singapore so low?

Singapore is the classic stopover destination between Europe and Oceania: The median of 3.6 days shows that most travelers plan to visit the city as a stopover of two to four days before continuing their journey.

What does median mean?

The median is the middle value: half of the travelers stay for a shorter time, half for a longer time. It is more meaningful than the average because individual extremely long stays do not distort the result.
