Monday, 17.02.20, Day 92

Published: 25.02.2020

Weir Beach Reserve, Waikawa

For today, we have set ourselves big goals. Our first stop is Slope Point: the southernmost point of the South Island. Unlike Cape Reinga (the northernmost point of New Zealand), where it was warm and sunny, Slope Point is rather cool and stormy. Then we stop at "The Lost Gipsy Gallery" - a small exhibition in an old camper. Here you can press, crank and push everything. In addition, you could watch the inventor and owner at work. On our way to a sea lion bay, we stop at the Purakaunui Falls. A short forest path leads to the waterfalls, which are really worth seeing, but are overrun by too many people. Quite the opposite to the sea lion bay - Surat Bay - which we only share with a few people and a sea lion colony. Luckily, the sea lions are much more active than expected. Our second to last stop for today is Nugget Point. The most impressive thing here is not the lighthouse, but the impressive coastal landscape with its many small rocky islands and steep cliffs. The best comes last: we have been looking forward to buying a surfboard all day. Ten minutes before closing time, we burst into the sports shop "Torpedo 7", which is not a problem as we have already informed ourselves and know which board is suitable for us. Now we proudly carry our own surfboard out of the shop. The day was eventful but very exhausting. Especially for Eileen, as she hasn't been feeling well all day.
