The capital of the South Island is a city full of contrasts. Historic trams run through the city.
But everywhere in the city center, you can still see the damage from the devastating earthquake in 2011.
The city center is full of empty lots and construction sites, but the so-called gapfillers have done a great job and beautified the city with a lot of creativity.
Some shops are still housed in temporary locations.
Particularly impressive are the 185 white chairs, each one representing one of the earthquake victims from 2011.
But many things have already been renewed...
and the city is trying to return to normal.
