Beijing - Forbidden City

Published: 22.03.2019

The Forbidden City was a must-see during our time in Beijing. Simply magnificent! It's unbelievable that an entire city was built for one person and their desires - but of course, it wasn't just any person, but the Son of Heaven himself!

It is a bit sad that now the masses of tourists (including us) flock to this place, which used to have the death penalty for unauthorized entry. It takes away some of the majesty of the place, but nonetheless, there is still so much to be deeply impressed by.

We also really enjoyed the treasure collection, which is definitely worth a visit. Unfortunately, the highly praised ceramic museum was closed. If you plan better than we did, you should bring your own food instead of going to the museum's restaurant.

During our visit, we noticed that in China, NOTHING can be done without our passport. It must be shown for every entrance, when paying the entrance fee, the passport number is entered into the system and serves as the ticket. The Chinese have to scan their ID for every entrance.

We spent the whole day at the Forbidden City - that means it ends at 4:45 pm when you are kicked out.

In the evening, we strolled through the hutongs and had dinner at a very good restaurant called "Little Yunnan".
