For the courier to the hostages in Mali

Published: 28.10.2021

When it became known on March 13, 2008, that the hostages kidnapped in Tunisia could be abducted to Mali, the KURIER asked if I wanted to fly to Mali. No problem for me, because I was already in the capital Bamako two months ago to hand over an ambulance donated by the Red Cross Groß-Enzersdorf. So I was vaccinated and ready to go immediately. When it was finally established that the hostages were in Mali, I flew to Africa the next day. On Friday, March 14, 2008, I started at nine o'clock in the morning for the adventure "In the footsteps of Wolfgang Ebner and Andrea Kloiber" to Mali in Africa.
From Flughafen Wien-Schwechat, I first flew to Paris, where I boarded the plane to Bamako after a three-hour wait at Charles De Gaulle Airport.
It was 10 p.m. when I set foot on Malian soil for the third time. I was expected by my friend Peter Klein, the former Austrian honorary consul in Mali, where I initially stayed.
But not for long, because the next day I had to flee, because Special Ambassador Prohaska was announced - and it was impossible for an Austrian reporter to stay with a member of the negotiating group. (To be continued)
