Day 17 Barringer Crater, Hoover Dam, and Las Vegas

Published: 26.09.2024

The evening in Las Vegas was so long and exciting that I couldn't write a blog and am catching up this morning. But let's take it step by step. From Flagstaff, we first visited the Barringer Crater. The crater is 50,000 years old and has a diameter of 1.2 km. In the 1960s to 1970s, NASA astronauts trained here to prepare for the Apollo mission to the moon. Now we had to cover 350 miles to reach the Hoover Dam. We were losing altitude and were only about 600 m high, which made the temperatures rise to 38°C. The Hoover Dam is an arch-gravity dam built in the 1930s and it impounds the Colorado River. The height of the dam is 221 m. A very impressive history. Now it wasn't far to Las Vegas. The traffic suddenly increased, and the roads suddenly had 6 to 8 lanes. We found our hotel easily and also a spot in the parking garage. Unfortunately, we had to carry our luggage through the casino to the rooms. Quickly freshening up and having something to eat before we drove to the center. Here, we booked a show with David Copperfield at 9:30 PM, which turned out to be an impressive magic show. After that, we strolled along the Strip and soaked in the atmosphere. After a nightcap at the hotel bar, we happily and contently fell into bed.
