We started our short stage with a ferry ride. After a half-hour wait, we arrived in twenty minutes from Glückstadt across the Elbe to Wischhafen.
We knew that friends were spending their vacation in Sehestedt at the Jade Bay for three days. So what could be more natural than to simply meet for tea? We found a parking spot nearby and called the site manager just to be sure that a spot would actually still be available for us. He confirmed, but advised us to arrive on time, as spring tide was forecast for today at 6:30 PM. We asked again if the spot would stay dry; after all, we had gotten stuck in wet ground with Gary before. He assured us that it would be no problem.
When we arrived in the early afternoon, the weather was still changeable, and we needed a bit of imagination to picture that the sea, just a few hundred meters away, would soon reach almost to our feet. During our walk around the campsite, we saw how people protected their caravans. They piled up a hill, secured it to form a platform, and placed the camping vehicle on top. Each of the spots here was a small mound.
In the evening, of course, we had to see this. The water had really risen to within ten meters of Gary, and the onshore wind pushed the waves far into the access road, cutting us off from the mainland.
And while the wind continued to shake the car steadily, we spent the evening watching the sea slowly retreating.
