Arriving in Madeira – First, an adventure on four wheels
The landing in Madeira was quite an experience in itself. The airport is spectacularly located right by the sea, and when the plane touches down on the runway, you almost feel like gliding over the water. After disembarking, everything moves along quite swiftly; the luggage comes quickly – and then we are picked up by our travel provider. Destination: the car rental station, a short distance from the airport.
Upon arrival, we are assigned our rental car – a compact small car, perfectly suited for the narrow streets of the island. Just before we get in, we notice a few scratches and small dents. We bring this up with the staff member, who just smiles warmly and says, “This is quite normal here. The roads are narrow, often steep uphill or downhill – a little bump is not always avoidable.” A quick check, everything is noted in the protocol, and we’re ready to go.
The drive to our hotel in Funchal turns out to be a little adventure in itself. Although the road is well developed, the steep slopes, sharp turns, and narrow alleys require quite a bit from the driver – especially if you’ve just arrived and are still getting used to the surroundings. It goes through tunnels, over bridges, and time and again, breathtaking views of the sea and the island’s green slopes unfold.
What quickly becomes clear: Driving in Madeira is not for the faint-hearted. The roads are often very narrow, the turns sharp, and if a bus or delivery van comes towards you, you need good nerves and a bit of skill. However, you are constantly rewarded with impressive panoramas – and the freedom to discover the island in your own way.
Upon arriving at the hotel, we are slightly sweaty, but also quite excited. The island instantly ignites a desire for more – and we are curious about what adventures await us and our small, slightly scratched companion.
