I admit the jet lag hit me hard. After falling asleep relatively quickly, I woke up at 0:30 am and couldn't fall back asleep. But we had to get up early. The ship was supposed to cross to Manhattan at 04:30 am and of course we wanted to be there. Ronald, on the other hand, never lets little things like time difference bother him and slept like a rock until departure. But getting up early was really worth it. Passing the Statue of Liberty and the impressive, illuminated skyline, we sailed up the Hudson River to the Manhattan Cruise Terminal. The view that greeted us changed every minute and we couldn't get enough of the lights of this city. At that moment, New York had completely captivated us and we felt like immigrants as we passed the illuminated Statue of Liberty. After a delicious breakfast at the bakery, we set out at 07:30 am to explore New York. After the bike tour with Tui didn't work out, we had to go with Plan B, which meant crossing New York on foot, 20 km. We had chosen a route from the internet in advance and adapted it to our needs. From the terminal, we walked up 48th Street to 11th Street, then up to 42nd Street and from there up to Times Square and then down Broadway. Continuing down Broadway to the Empire State Building. From there, we walked along 5th Street with a detour to Grand Central Station, then on to the Rockefeller Center (where the ice rink was already open) past the Trump Tower to Central Park. We crossed the park from right to left and boarded the Subway Line C at 59th Street. With this, we went under the Brooklyn Bridge to High Street. From there, we could easily cross the Brooklyn Bridge on foot. That was a detour that was really worth it. We were totally impressed by the architecture of the bridge and the view of the skyline from the bridge. The Brooklyn Bridge is one of the oldest suspension bridges in the USA. It was completed in 1883. The bridge has 6 lanes and a wide foot and bike path on the level above. It spans the East River and connects Manhattan and Brooklyn. From the Brooklyn Bridge, we continued to Wall Street, past the New York Stock Exchange to 9/11. The 9/11 Memorial is the memorial for the victims of the terrorist attacks of September 11th, 2001. Two large pools are located where the Twin Towers once stood. They are surrounded by a copper border with the names of the 2983 victims engraved on them. From 9/11, we took the subway to 42nd Street. From here, we walked down from 8th Street to 12th Street and then we saw the ship lying at the pier again. We saw a lot on this tour. We were very impressed with New York. The number of skyscrapers and the canyons of houses were incredible. However, we felt the 20 km we walked in our legs and were really glad to relax on the balcony of our cabin with a beer from the walk.
