62. Bwejuu (Zanzibar/Tanzania)

We would have loved to stay a little longer in Asia and continue our journey to Malaysia and Singapore, but unfortunately it was not possible due to the pandemic and we could not enter. That's why we are now flying to Africa and starting our new adventure here on the island of Zanzibar!

The flight goes via Ethiopia, we have a delay in Addis Ababa and are on the road for almost 24 hours.

Freezing cold on the plane!

Our first stop is on the east coast in Bwejuu, not far from Paje.

Thanks to Lisa and her staff for the relaxing time at Hoom and the interesting conversations about your culture and your life!

Tanzania is one of the poorest countries in the world (average annual income of 540 US dollars, even less in Zanzibar), more than half of the population lives below the poverty line and the population of Zanzibar is almost entirely Muslim.

After Asia, it's a bit of a cultural shock for us, everything is suddenly different again and we have to realize that we are now in Africa. We are warned not to walk around in the evenings, prices vary and we have to bargain a lot, ATMs are partly manipulated, i.e. they deduct money but don't dispense it, and the Maasai people on the beach walk long distances next to us and want to sell their jewelry.

We spend a lot of time in the bars and restaurants on the beach, where we get to know some local staff and slowly immerse ourselves in the new culture.

Finally, we send greetings to Dortmund and Dresden to Gabi, Steffen, Thilo, and Joe - it was very nice and funny with you!!
