The museum tells the story of witch hunts in Denmark. Ribe was at the center of Danish witch trials and the most famous one took place in the streets surrounding the museum. In 1641, the tailor Maren Spliid was burned at the stake after being tortured for 7 months in Copenhagen and then sentenced to death. Gunpowder was tied around her body to properly drive away evil spirits.
The museum is quite impressive and very different than expected. Everything is explained and visually represented in Danish, English, and German. From the smallest details about torture methods to superstitious rituals, everything is well explained. The museum is not suitable for young children.
