Day 24 - Lake Entrance and Sapphire Coast

Published: 28.12.2017

In the morning, we first drive to Lake Entrance, the place where the Gippsland Lakes flow into the sea.

Afterwards, we head to the Sapphire Coast and thus to a new state of Australia, namely New South Wales. The Sapphire Coast stretches for about 150km along the southern coastal area of NSW. You can discover beautiful beaches, bays, and places here. Unfortunately, we can't stop everywhere, so we'll pick a little bit of everything.

First, we drive to the coast of Pambula and see a beautiful beach with red rocks. The sea has high waves, certainly great for surfing.

Then we continue to Merimbula, where we first get a camping spot at the campsite for a whopping $79 (with a nagging discount) (yes, yes, it's holiday season and you already pay double🤣). The lovely lady at the reception shows us the best snorkeling spots on the map and also explains the ocean current to us. She herself snorkels very often. So we pack our snorkeling gear and drive to Bar Beach, where we paddle along the coastline towards Fischer Warf. It's fascinating how close octopuses and larger fish come to the beach, because barely 5m away from our find, people are splashing in the waves. Trembling and exhausted (the nice lady didn't exaggerate about the currents), we go back to land and dry ourselves off. To our annoyance, as soon as we're dried off, a dolphin🐬🐬 swims in the spot where we just snorkeled.

In the evening, we want to have a cocktail at Fischer Warf, but unfortunately, it's closed today. And in general, like in so many places in Australia, the sidewalks are folded up pretty early. But an ice cream parlor is still open, so we toast to the day with two delicious scoops of ice cream.
