Week 23&24

It has been a while since my last entry. Most of you probably know that I was in Germany over Christmas and New Year's. Additionally, I 'resigned' due to complications at my previous job, and two weeks ago I was transferred from the capital Kigali to the small town of Ruhango, about a 2-hour bus ride to the south. Here, I have my own apartment on the campus of the school where I am now placed, and for example, I finally have a functional kitchen, which was not the case in my house in Kigali. Unfortunately, the responsible parties at the school seem to feel hardly responsible for me, which is why I have only given about 3 hours of lessons in the past two and a half weeks. And since there is very little to do in Ruhango otherwise, and there are no other German volunteers in this town, I mainly find myself bored at the moment.

However, I have a much more important concern. A very good friend of mine, whom I met here at my former workplace, stopped working there for exactly the same reason as I did. At his request, I cannot tell you exactly what happened, but the important thing is that he lost his previous perspective without having any influence on it. Accordingly, I sat down with him and another fellow volunteer from Germany to find a way to help him and make his dream of completing an apprenticeship in Germany a reality. And indeed, we managed to find him an apprenticeship position as a nursing assistant. Of course, this is not a cheap undertaking. My fellow volunteer's parents are willing to cover a significant part of the costs, but they cannot bear all of them. To raise money for, for example, his language course in Germany as well as other necessary expenses, we started a fundraising campaign on gofundme.com. I’m linking the fundraising campaign in the attachment - he wrote a text himself detailing his situation and motivation even more precisely. We put the campaign online yesterday and have already reached 1300 Euros of the targeted 3700 Euros in less than 24 hours.
