From rocks and ocean and more... along the South Coast of Oregon

Published: 14.07.2023

After yesterday's drive along the North Coast of Oregon with fantastic panoramas, we were very excited about what awaited us in the south of the state coast. Could it be topped?

Our first stop along Highway 101 on the Pacific Coast Scenic Byway was Depoe Bay, with the Depoe Scenic Area. Very beautifully located town on the coast. We especially like the houses that stand on the coastal cliffs. So if someone asked us, we would gladly own one of them...

But what also stood out in Depoe once again is that every place, no matter how small, has its "Mr. Nice Guy". An official cannabis and marijuana retail store. Here in the USA, so much weed and other grasses are smoked that the smell constantly wafts through the air. Unpleasant! In our last hotel, the stench from the neighbor came into the room through the air conditioning. Not good!

After being in the fresh air, we visited "Devils Punchbowl" afterwards. What was considered a stroke of luck yesterday to have low tide to observe Haystack Rock with all its sea creatures, was a disadvantage today. It was low tide again and therefore the devil didn't play with the Punch Bowl. It was quiet in the bowl...

Things got more dynamic at the next stop: Thor's Well! During low tide, there was a lot of movement in the well. Depending on how strong the wave came from the outside, the pressure forced the water up with full force, often up to the edge. Sometimes even a fountain came out of the well... Just like at Haystack Rock, the well was completely covered with shells. There were also sea anemones again...

The next stops were more characterized by the beach and here and there a few rock formations. Not as beautiful as in the northern coastal section, but also noteworthy and overall much rougher and more original...

In Shore Acres State Park, we found a fallen tree that has probably been there for several decades, and its strong roots were visible. Nice photo opportunity!

We saw living subjects in Cape Arago State Park. Here we had a clear view of sea lions and harbor seals.

As at the beginning of today's tour, this tour also ended at Face Rock State Park, which was built with beautiful houses on the coastal edge. Also here: If there are too many, please let us know 😊.

At the end of the day, we waited and watched a great sunset from our balcony with a sea view in Gold Beach, unfortunately we were two minutes too late on the balcony, the sun had already drowned too far... ☹
