We spend the night in our camper at 2 degrees and sleet, which is being rocked by the gusts of wind. Hard to believe, but it was worth it. At 8 o'clock the sky clears up and an incredibly beautiful scenery appears. We are allowed to do our 10km hike in bright sunshine. This is really another highlight of our trip.
Arriving at Hooker Lake, we observe small icebergs melting. Again and again, we hear the sound of ice blocks falling into the water.
The glaciers here are melting very quickly. We could see that best at the Tasman Glacier viewpoint. It's incredible how big the glacier must have been 20 years ago.
On the way back, we stop again at Lake Pukaki. The water is shining bright blue in the radiant sunshine. Bluer than yesterday.
In the afternoon, we continue our journey towards Wanaka. We want to effectively use the next few sunny days for outdoor activities.
