09.05. Fraser Island 🇦🇺

Published: 09.05.2018

Today we were on Fraser Island - the largest sand island in the world. You can drive directly on the sand here with all-wheel drive. Fraser Island is about twice the size of Rügen. An infinitely long sandy beach serves as the official highway of the island. There are even traffic signs and a highway police (who stopped us because our driver was driving too fast😅).

Our first stop was at a rusted shipwreck that has been sinking deeper into the sand for 90 years.

Then we climbed a small hill and enjoyed the view of the endless sandy beaches of the island.

Afterwards, we went swimming in the "Champagne Pools". This natural pool is separated from the open sea by rocks. Since many sharks circulate around the island, you can only swim in this "pool" in the sea with peace of mind.

After lunch, we made our way to the famous Lake McKenzie. The drive was very bumpy and wobbly (as I said, there are no roads, only sand, small bumps, and many puddles).

The freshwater lake has a diameter of 1 km and consists of groundwater. The water is very clear and shines in blue because the sand is beautiful white. We went swimming (okay, Paddy went swimming, Lisa only put her legs in).

Finally, we took the ferry back to the mainland at sunset.
