Today we left Patagonia and flew 1,400 km as the crow flies to Puerto Montt. There we picked up the rental car and started the next leg of our journey. In the next few days, we will explore the landscape of volcanoes and lakes. The Osorno Volcano is a perfect example, as it forms a symmetrical cone. There is a ski resort towards the top.
You can get a great view of Osorno from the city of Frutillar. Frutillar surprises with its beautiful and well-maintained houses. The city was founded by German immigrants, and this influence is still evident today. You can find a German school, a German club, and architectural elements from Germany on the houses. The beach life here is very relaxed and normal. No loud music and no air filled with the smell of french fries. A visit here is always worthwhile.
We will be staying at our hotel in Puerto Varas, on the shores of Lake Llanquihue, the second largest lake in Chile, with an area of 860 square kilometers. For comparison, Lake Constance has just over 500 square kilometers.
Tomorrow, we plan to go hiking on Osorno and visit the Petrohue Waterfalls in Vicente Perez Rosales National Park.
