The Portuguese cuisine is the national cuisine of Portugal. Despite the small size of the country, it is very diverse: traditional cuisine is based on a wide variety of fish and seafood, meat, vegetables, rice, and potatoes; the Feijão, the bean, is also an important part of Portuguese cuisine, which is also used for sweets. Stews and soups have always played a major role. Plenty of olive oil is used for cooking. In the north, people prefer hearty dishes, loaded with a lot of meat and energy, especially to get through the cold winters. Cold and hot appetizers and snacks, called Petiscos, are popular. Culinary influences from the former Portuguese colonies can be found mainly in urban areas, less in rural regions.
