Today our journey continues northwards, along the Porsangerfjord, Sanes, Olderfjord to Honningsvåg on the island of Magerøya.

On Ifjordfjellet, we can observe a reindeer separation up close.

The animals are separated into smaller groups and then marked and partially vaccinated in the last chamber. The markings involve cuts made in the animals' ears. While it may look quite bloody, the animals seem to recover very quickly. After barely 5 minutes, the group is finished and is let back into a large enclosure. Shortly thereafter, the next group of reindeer comes up...

Ifjordfjellet is a reindeer mountain in the Finnmark region of northern Norway, known for the traditional migration of reindeer herds, where the animals cross two glaciers and a fjord in the autumn to reach their grazing areas. This area plays an important role in the culture of the Sámi, who have been herding reindeer for thousands of years.

Ifjordfjellet is a region that the reindeer herds must traverse on their way from summer pastures on the coast to the inland.

In September, the reindeer herds travel a long distance of several hundred kilometers. They have to cross two glaciers and a fjord.

 

The speed and path of the animals are mainly determined by their instincts. The reindeer family only gives cues, for example, to find the correct direction for crossing the fjord.

The reindeer are a central part of Sámi culture and traditions. The migration of the herds is an important annual event that can also be an experience for tourists.

The reindeer herd may wait at the glaciers or in the fjord for a signal from the family. The crossing of the fjord occurs in a closed group.

Our beautiful, cozy cabin, where we will stay for the next five nights, is located on a very small island with two other cabins, accessible only by foot over a bridge. In the evening, we will once again marvel at the stunning northern lights, right from our little island.
