This morning we arrive in Trondheim. In the Trondheimfjord, we meet our sister ship Nordkapp. We will visit the old town, the Nidaros Cathedral, and the Christmas market.

The old town of Trondheim, known as Bakklandet, is an idyllic neighborhood along the Nidelva River, famous for its colorful, historic wooden houses from the 17th century. It is a vibrant area with cobbled streets, cozy cafés, restaurants, and small boutiques.

Highlights in and around Bakklandet:
  • Gamle Bybro (Old Town Bridge): The famous photo motif with the red gates connects the city center with Bakklandet.
  • Historical atmosphere: The former residences of craftsmen and workers create a charming, car-free environment.
  • Bicycle lift 'Trampe': The world's first bicycle lift is located in Bakklandet, helping cyclists up the steep hill.
  • Nidelva waterfront: Along the river, there are also the old warehouses, which now often serve as apartments or restaurants.

Bakklandet was nearly demolished in the past but was preserved through citizen protests and is now a lively neighborhood. The Nidaros Cathedral in Trondheim (formerly known as Nidaros) is one of the most significant churches in Norway, regarded as a national shrine. It has been the cathedral for the Norwegian Metropolitans since 1152. Because the shrine of Saint Olaf was located behind the high altar, the cathedral was also nicknamed "Heart of Norway". After the Reformation, it became the cathedral of the Evangelical Lutheran Bishops of the Diocese of Nidaros. Since 2011, it has also been the seat of the newly established office of the chairperson of the Norwegian Bishops' Conference.

During the Middle Ages and from 1818 to 1906, the Nidaros Cathedral served as the coronation site for Norwegian kings. Seven kings were crowned here, and ten were buried.

To the south of the Nidaros Cathedral is the Archbishop's Palace.
