It's almost time. The Haunold ski area in the Sexten Dolomites is opening. After months of closure, ski enthusiasts in the Hochpustertal region will be looking forward to December 6th, when the 2012/2013 ski season finally begins. Even though South Tyrol's largest ski area, the Kronplatz, has already opened, the Haunold ski area offers an additional highlight, the spectacular night skiing. Who wouldn't want to ski down the impressive slopes of the Sexten Dolomites at night and end the day with an après-ski at the ski area?

Highlights in the Haunold ski area

The Haunold ski area is one of the most impressive ski areas in the Sexten Dolomites. Not only because of its dream location on the 2,966 m high Haunold mountain in Innichen, but also because of the exciting highlights that are offered time and again. In 1997, Innichen hosted the Snowboard World Championships in its Haunold ski area. Years later, Snowboard World Cup races were held here and today the ski area is dedicated to a sport that is not yet so well known, but undoubtedly spectacular, ski cross. Former Super G World Champion Daron Rahlves was also inspired by this sport and competed in a few ski cross races in Innichen. But not only the annual Skicross World Cup race at the Haunold ski area is a real highlight, but much more the winter highlight that has been offered since the 2011/2012 season - namely the impressive and spectacular night skiing on the Haunold ski mountain.

Night skiing on Haunold in Innichen

From December 25th to March 29th, 2012, skiers can turn day into night.

Every Tuesday and Friday from 7:00 to 10:00 p.m., the unique night skiing takes place in the Haunold ski area. You can go up with the 4-person chairlift to the Riese Haunold Hut and then go downhill on the well-groomed slopes of the Haunold ski area.
Of course, there is sufficient visibility. All ski slopes are illuminated by extravagant spotlights, which eliminates any dangers.

Those who don't want to spend all their time on the slopes can indulge in the Tyrolean specialties of the Riese Haunold Hut. Two years ago, this mountain hut was newly built and now offers enough seating for about 100 people. One tip from me is to try the homemade Tyrolean Schlutzkrapfen at the Riese Haunold Hut, you should definitely try them.

If you don't master skiing or snowboarding, you can have fun here with sledging. The Haunold ski area has a great sledging run, which is also open on nights with night skiing. You can rent sledges directly at the Riese Haunold Hut, which can be returned after the downhill ride on the chairlift.
If you still have the desire and energy after night skiing on Haunold, you can end your day in a festive atmosphere at Après Ski Angelo's Pub. DJs provide entertainment and sometimes there is also live music in the form of a live band. The après-ski is also located directly at the Haunold ski area in the Sexten Dolomites.

My conclusion:

Ready with the skis? If not, you should hurry, because the days are numbered until the Haunold ski area in the Sexten Dolomites finally opens. If you've given up skiing already, you should try skiing at night on the slopes like night skiing on Haunold. This gives you the thrill of being on the slopes again, because it's really great fun. Later in the evening, you can treat yourself to a drink at Angelo's Pub and an adventurous day can come to an end.
