01/10/2018 first day at billabong.
A short start
This morning I got picked up by the ranger kim and we drove to the billabong zoo. There is no bus station or other public transport there which is why they are going to pick me up everday.
Arriving at the sanctuary, meeting the keepers and the organiser Jules. It was obvious that the billabong zoo did not have the staff or the wealth of lone pine. The sanctuary is smaller then lone pine but really nicely made. Basically built directly into the forest, with a small pond in the middle. They mentioned multiple times that they were fairly low on staff and seemed to appreciate whatever help they could get. On monday I was there with one other volunteer. There are other volunteers but they just have specific days and not the entire week.
My day started with raking the pathway and then preparing some food. I also was able to hold a blue tongue lizard and give it random people who wanted to hold it. We got a short morning break. There I met the ranger 'tabs', she is currently handraising a baby padymelon called timmi. Basically a wallaby but even smaller.
At lunch we got a sandwiches for free. There is a slight discount for the other meals aswell. We continued by Picking up some trashcans and emptying them.
The day went by, pretty fast. I got to drive back with jules. Since kim was still busy. Jules also informed me that since kim was picking me up, I had the same days as her. That means I now have weekend until thursday. And that I will work on saturday and sundays.
I dont really mind it, and that the sanctuary is kinda small isnt a problem. Sure its not lone pine but here you really make a difference as a volunteer. So its going to be fun
The evening I spent at the empire arcade. There I met Aaron and Carlie and spent some time with them. I will probably see them around since the're staying here in townsville.
