Beijing's Backyards

In the afternoon, we planned to visit the 'Tiananmen Square' and maybe pay a visit to 'Chairman Mao'. We wanted to save the 'Forbidden City' for another day. We took the subway. The square was closed off.

One had to queue up and show their ID. But we didn't have our passport with us. So we had to come up with an alternative plan. First thought: a tour bus that could take us around in circles and show us all the beautiful things in Beijing. However, no bus arrived at the designated stop. After waiting for a while, we had to come up with a new plan. The guidebook recommended a walk through Beijing's 'hutongs', the alleys between the old houses of Beijing.

We simply strolled around, following the recommended route from the guidebook, turning left and right.

The houses have everything a Chinese person needs, including a pigeon house if necessary.

This part of our visit to Beijing was my personal favorite. The alleys and their backyards have a charm that you have to experience.
The houses are becoming increasingly sought-after investment objects. With a historic facade, the interior is being renovated and the owner(s) live in the middle of Beijing.
For dinner, we wanted something Western again. So we chose a 'steakhouse' that was 'only' 5km away. Bad idea! 5km by car in the evening in Beijing takes 1 hour. After dinner, we would have had to wait 1 hour for a taxi, a disaster! Luckily, there is still the subway with a station in front of our hotel!
