Zypern - Limassol

Published: 14.07.2024

This morning we arrived in Limassol, Cyprus.

Cyprus...shows us fabulous nature! High mountains, lush vegetation and beautiful beaches.

We are traveling to Nicosia, the only capital in the world that has been divided for 50 years.

In the archaeological museum we admire artifacts from all periods since the beginning of Cypriot history. We are not really museum visitors anymore, but it was interesting, of course also because our tour guide had a lot to tell us. After a short walk through the Greek part of the city, we tried the Greek-Cypriot specialty "Bougaza" in an old bakery. A delicious dessert, with custard and cinnamon and sugar. Delicious!

Then we continued to the border crossing in the middle of the city. We stopped at the former caravanserai Büyük Han. Very nice atmosphere.
The stables for the animals and small shops were on the ground floor, and the travelers' sleeping quarters were upstairs.
Unfortunately, the Agia Sophia was hidden behind scaffolding, so we could only catch a glimpse of this beautiful building.

We were all very impressed by the dance of the dervishes. The dance lasted about 10 minutes for us. However, the dance can be extended to up to 45 minutes. It's amazing.
The Persian term »darvish« means both beggar and wanderer, but also ecstatic. In its actual meaning, it refers to people who have renounced worldly goods and instead follow the path of seeking God.

We learned some interesting facts about life in a divided city by meeting two journalists, a Greek and a Turkish Cypriot.
