Eight years ago, I pedaled through Alaska and Canada's vast expanses on my bike. Famished and with the scent of weeks-long travel in my jersey, I met Donna and Pat in Paradise Valley. What started with a can of beer still continues as a deep friendship. Pat is my soulmate, and Donna gave me the best compliment ever.
The path of life brought them together only in the last third of their lives. He, the former rodeo star, cowboy, and psychology professor, and she, who still pursues her passion as a waitress in a restaurant. Pat took me under his wing like a father, provided no answers but asked questions, and simply trusted in me. I had the privilege of supporting this intelligent and lovely person in difficult times. We philosophized, laughed, and wrestled with words together (mostly me). Sometimes, we just sit silently because connection doesn't need words.
