Myella Farm/Cattle Station (20th - 22nd October 2018)

Published: 21.10.2018

We left Airlie Beach early in the morning at 7 o'clock to cover the nearly 600 km to our next destination - Myella Cattle Farm. After 300 km heading south along the coast, we then went southwest through the bush. For 200 km, there was no town or gas station in sight. Finally, we reached a village with a gas station to refuel. For the last 75 km, Google Maps (in offline mode) wanted to take us on an unsealed road. We switched to a different GPS app and arrived at our destination with the correct route.

At Myella Cattle Ranch, a cattle farm with vegetable cultivation, we were greeted by three kangaroos and the hostess, Petra. Petra immediately offered to feed one of the kangaroo babies with special milk. Before the communal dinner with delicious beer (brewed by the owner himself), we hiked up a hill with four other guests - a Dutch couple, an Englishwoman, and a Swiss woman - to experience a fabulous sunset for about 30 minutes.

The early wake-up was worth it the next day to greet the kangaroos hopping around the grounds at sunrise. Absolutely amazing!

In the morning, the owner killed a venomous snake and a poisonous frog near our accommodation. The frog had just killed a non-venomous snake. That's just how it is here - a strange feeling.

After a hearty breakfast, horse riding was on the agenda for the morning: First, we received a detailed introduction to Australian horsemanship, and then we explored the area on an extensive ride. Upon returning to the accommodation, we had a light lunch followed by an afternoon farm tour (the farm property is about 5 km long and 4 km wide) through the bush in a 4x4 vehicle.

We ended the evening with a communal dinner and the next morning we headed back to the ocean on the coast.

We really enjoyed our stay at the ranch and highly recommend it.
