30/31.12.2017: A short visit by M. in the Weser Uplands took us to Bad Pyrmont and deeper into the Teutoburg Forest. We visited the Hermann (Germanized for Arminius) as a symbol of Germanic history. He not only stands for the Battle of the Teutoburg Forest (9 AD), in which Arminius defeated the superior Romans under Varus, but is also considered a symbol of German unification in the era of the German Empire in 1971. After that, we went to the Externsteine. A mystical place in the middle of the forest, about which not much is really known to this day. Only one thing is certain: this unique rock formation, which does not exist anywhere else in the forest, has captivated people for millennia. We welcomed the new year from the Köterberg, the highest mountain in the Weser Uplands, and were practically in the middle of the fireworks that were going off around us.
