From Sucre we first drove towards Salkantay and at our first campsite we set off to a beautiful lagoon overlooking a glacier. Here we immediately noticed that we were at 3800m and needed to acclimatize to the high altitude. The next day we hiked up the Salkantay Pass. Marina didn't always find it easy and she was relieved when she reached the 4600m and the 'summit'. The descent into the valley was wonderful and the landscape transformed into a lush green jungle. We spent the evening leisurely playing card games. The third day started rainy but turned out to be quite nice. Unfortunately, our guide made two decisions that we were unhappy with, so we missed out on a visit to an Inca ruin that day. A passion fruit farm and the hot springs lifted our spirits, but unfortunately the evening at the chosen campsite, or rather disco/drinking party with 3 other groups, was a bit weird. On the fourth day, strangely enough, we only walked along roads or the train tracks, and when we talked to another group, we realized that our guide had missed an ascent to a neighboring mountain of Machu Picchu. Nevertheless, we were still looking forward to Machu Picchu and watched the spectacle. However, we all agree: unique location, the original ruins are wonderful, but the hustle and bustle and the overorganization with a designated walking direction were terrible! For us, it was above all the great trek that will stay with us for a long time.
