The independence of Cartagena refers to the events that took place on November 11, 1811, when Cartagena de Indias declared its absolute independence from Spain, becoming the first territory of the current Republic of Colombia to declare itself as such. The second city in South America (after Caracas) to declare independence from Spain was Cartagena de Indias, on November 11, 1811, initiating a series of events of great importance in which it would defend its right to freedom against the Spanish Empire.
