Day 125 Around Carnarvon

Published: 16.10.2022

On our second day we drove at first to Babbage Island to visit the Lighthouse Keepers Cottage, the Carnarvon Lighthouse Museum and the one mile jetty. Well, Stuart enjoyed walking & sitting on the old tractor and other agricultural machines on display with the tiny lighthouse, but otherwise there wasn´t really anything to see, although all the information about Carnarvon named it as a 'must do' here....

So we decided to explore some things around Carnarvon, but at first we brightened our mood with some ice-cream from the Bumbak ice-cream shop on the way. First stop north of Carnarvon was Point Quobba. It looked like a good place to snorkel to watch some fish. As it was very windy and cold, we couldn´t be bothered to go into the cold water (and we had no wet-suits as the other people snorkelling), but just enjoyed the views.

Around the corner of Point Quobba is the Quobba Blow Hole. The way is pretty rough and you can see the salt leftover from the water splash, but Stuart found a dry spot to watch the Blow Hole. Every 10min or so, the Blow Hole had a big water splash. The Quobba Lighthouse turned out to be a real lighthouse not Stuart-size version like on Babbage Island

After watching the Blow Hole for a while we decided to drive into the north to Red Bluff, the beginning of the Ningaloo Reef. Well, there was a known (?) surfer sign next to the road, goat next to and other wildlife on the road, but otherwise not much to see on this pretty rough and long drive to Red Bluff. Then Red Bluff was just a private property offering basic camping near the beach, but nothing more to see or explore.
