After almost 24 hours of travel, we arrived in New York on Friday (November 17th, 2023). From Nairobi we first went to London, where we had to change trains for the first time. Next stop: Madrid. Here too we had to change planes again and nine hours later we were finally at our destination - hello New York 😍.
The first night we stayed in a really hip hotel in the Brooklyn district and our first house sit started on Saturday. Since we deliberately only slept on the first two flights and stayed awake for the last nine hours on the third flight, we didn't have any jet lag despite the eight hour time difference 😁. A housesit means that we live in an apartment or house of people who are away. Our job is to look after animals and plants and in return we are allowed to “live” there free of charge. Housesits are arranged via an app. This makes it possible for us to travel to the USA at all because the cost of living is very high and this destination doesn't actually fit into our budget.
Our house sit lasts three days. We are currently living in Jamie and Victor's apartment. Here it is our job to feed the fish, look after the two cats and look after the dog Xander. Xander is a former street dog and has only been living with the young couple for six months. He often demands our attention and is not yet fully trained. We walk with him for five hours every day and the three of us explore the Williamsburg district. All three of us like the route to and along the East River best. Here you have a great view of the Manhattan skyline and the Williamsburg Bridge.
New York is in every respect a stark contrast to our previous trip. From bathing suits to long underwear, from “poverty” to “wealth”. It is a big change for us to get back to our usual standards.
Yesterday and today we used the time between the morning round and the lunch round with Xander to look at Manhattan. It only takes us twenty minutes to get to Manhattan by subway.
Today is the last day with Xander and Co. Tomorrow a new house sit begins in South Orange, a suburb of New York.
