Athens Ἀθῆναι

Published: 28.10.2022

At the train station in Thessaloniki, we wanted to leisurely reserve the next train to Athens, but it was already full. So we had to wait for the next train (2 hours later), which was bearable with good Greek food. However, when we finally arrived in Athens, we had to search for our accommodation again. The location is great, but one should possibly avoid certain streets at night. On the first evening, we went to a really nice vegan gyro place with many young cool people. Afterward, we watched the Champions League (Barcelona - Bayern Munich) in a very friendly bar. Besides students from Barcelona and Munich, we had a few beers. Maria has become quite a steady beer drinker and sometimes faster than Kevin. Generally, we really liked the student district Exarchia. One more tip: as a tourist, you should pay attention to the prices in the mini supermarkets. If there are no price tags or receipts, you have most likely paid the tourist price. The next day, we explored Athens. Two things that are rare: trash cans and public toilets. To visit the major tourist attractions around the Acropolis, you have to pay €30 per person. That was too much for us for just an afternoon, so luckily we found a public path that passed by very close. Some of the sights could be entered (intentionally or unintentionally) along this path without a ticket, so it was perfect for us. We bid farewell to Athens with a typical Greek meal. Now we are heading to the ferry to Italy, or as Kevin calls it: a cruise. Little spoiler: Bari (Italy) will leave a lasting impression on Maria.
