Day 19: Winschoten - Delfzijl (via Nieuwolda 24.5 km)

Published: 02.07.2023

Good evening!

It is currently eight o'clock in the evening and we are in our room with a very pleasant couple in Delfzijl, but the day started relatively early in a beautiful mansion in Winschoten.

We woke up early because we went to bed early, tired as we were, it was wonderful to lie in a comfortable bed, read, and sleep, especially after the bad night in that rotten/dirty room in Weener... which I gave my first online review about and marked everything as the worst, ha!

Back to Winschoten, what lovely people they were! And how well we were taken care of! A delicious breakfast was ready for us at 8 o'clock and when we finished it and packed our things, it was time to say goodbye and start walking again.

We started walking through Winschoten, a different feeling of walking! Then we went through a beautiful lane with old trees and straight ahead along the lake of the Blue City, a city that, just like the lake, is brand new and built to attract tourists so that some money can flow into the municipality's coffers.

After that, we arrived in Midwolda where we had a nice chat with two residents of the village for about fifteen minutes. They were curious about what we were doing here and where we were headed. When we told them we were walking to Nieuwolda, one of the two said that it would be very straight and very empty towards Nieuwolda, and he was right! But it was still beautiful to walk through the fields, although the famous cloud band tried to make our life difficult! (See photo)

In the village itself, we hoped that a café would be open for a drink, but unfortunately! Only the church is open on Sundays!

Well, then we continued to Delfzijl and thus searched for the bus stop. Luckily, the bus runs on Sundays! So after a fifteen-minute wait, it arrived and was driven by a very nice bus driver who told us all about the area. When we were almost there, he gave us a great tip on where to have good coffee, namely in the Eemshotel. At first, I thought I could find something closer in the city, but after a fifteen-minute walk, I had to admit that everything in Delfzijl is closed on Sundays, except... exactly! So we went to the Eemshotel where we enjoyed a delicious cup of coffee with a beautiful view of the Eems, and because we were sitting so comfortably, we decided to have dinner there as well so that we wouldn't have to look for a restaurant tonight.

We had decided to walk to the address where we were staying tonight, so after enjoying all the delicious treats, we set off on foot towards the other end of Delfzijl, about an hour's walk, which was easy to do thanks to Google Maps, and that's how we arrived in high spirits at our host's and hostess's place, where we were warmly welcomed with a beer and chatted for about two hours until they had to eat and shower... and now, well, now we are in the room with wine and chips, writing this blog!

See you tomorrow.

Good evening!

It is currently nine o'clock in the evening and we are in our room with a very pleasant couple in Delfzijl. The day started very early in a magnificent, huge house in Winschoten.

We woke up early because we went to bed really early; tired as we were, it was delightful to lie in a comfortable bed, read, and sleep, especially after the bad night before in Weener. Aad gave a bad review for the first time.

Regarding Winschoten, what lovely people they were! And how well we were taken care of! A delicious breakfast was ready at eight o'clock. When we were done and had packed our things, it was time to say goodbye and hit the road.

We walked straight through Winschoten - a different kind of hiking. Then we walked through an avenue of trees straight to the lake of the Blue City, a new residential area with an artificial lake, built to attract tourists and fill the municipality's coffers with additional money.

After that, we arrived in Midwolda, where we had a pleasant chat with two village residents for about fifteen minutes. They were curious about what we were doing here and where we were heading. When we told them we were walking to Nieuwolda, one of them said that it would be very straight and very empty towards Nieuwolda, which seemed to be true! But it was still beautiful to walk between the fields and see the wheat on the left and the barley on the right in the granary of Groningen. Giant fields as far as the eye can see, although the famous cloud band tried to make our life difficult (see photo). A cool and strong wind blows.

In the village itself, we hoped that a café would be open for a drink, but unfortunately! Only the church is open on Sundays!

Well, then we continued to Delfzijl, and so we searched for the bus stop. Luckily, the bus runs on Sundays! So after a fifteen-minute wait, it arrived and was driven by a very nice bus driver who told us all about the area. When we were almost there, he gave us a great tip on where to have good coffee, namely in the Eemshotel. At first, I thought I could find something closer in the city, but after a fifteen-minute walk, I had to admit that everything in Delfzijl is closed on Sundays, except... exactly! So we went to the Eemshotel, where we enjoyed a delicious cup of coffee with a beautiful view of the Eems, and because we felt so good, we decided to have something to eat right away so that we wouldn't have to look for a restaurant tonight.

We decided to walk to the address where we are staying tonight and set off. It takes about an hour to walk to the other end of Delfzijl, which is easily doable with Google Maps, and that's how we ended up at our hosts' place, in a good mood. We were warmly welcomed with a beer here and chatted for about two hours.

Interestingly, Ineke and I share a similar passion. She collects stones that she buys from dealers and turns them into beautiful pendants or rings in the Tiffany style. I, on the other hand, collected the stones during my activities in the forest and then tumbled them. This will be a project by our front door later.

Gradually, it's time for us to retreat, take a shower, and write the blog.

See you tomorrow!
