Preparations for our campervan holiday in New Zealand

Published: 10.10.2023

The to-do list for our once-in-a-lifetime parental leave trip to New Zealand seemed endless... just to name a few points:

  • Set time period
  • Book a camper
  • book flight
  • Set route
  • Etc
When we booked our campervan via Wendekreisen and the flights with Singapore Airlines - all a year in advance - I was flashed: WOW, we're really doing this!!!
We decided not to book an extra seat for our little one on the flights because the flights themselves were expensive enough. We'll see if it was the right thing - haha. Open jaw flight FRA - AKL and CHC - FRA. At least we have the bassinet (bed) places with more leg room.
A self-contained camper (important for freedom camping) with three seats and a child seat in the front. And the foundations for our journey were already laid.

Travel destination inspiration

I collected our individual sights on Instagram a long time ago and picked out individual accounts and compared the routes with my favorites. So far I've always done well. A New Zealand travel group on Facebook answered open questions well. I had a travel planner, but didn't use it.

Pre-book or spontaneous?

Then we still had forever, but since our travel time over Christmas coincided with the New Zealanders' holidays, we had to book camping sites and individual activities. Takes away the spontaneity of a camping trip, but seems to be necessary according to many reports. Besides, I'm really a planning person anyway: So we did it about half a year to 2 months before the start of the trip.
