5th Stage of Camino del Norte from Santona to Güemes
At the posada where I stayed last night, I was actually the only guest. I sat all alone for breakfast. I prepared a baguette for the road and then went back to my room. I had...

Today, I was up early and set off on my way correspondingly early. There were three Canadians at my accommodation. They started walking with me. We chatted a lot along the way. Actually, they started as four, but one had health problems and had to return to Canada. By the way, they also found Güemes quite sleepy.
We quickly left the town behind and walked along the local road. We encountered a few road cyclists who wished us a good Camino. In the next small town, I first said goodbye to the three of them because I wanted to sit down in a café. I had made a point of this: Whenever the opportunity for a snack or drink presents itself, I will take it!!!!
I ordered a coffee and a water in Spanish and also asked for the restroom in Spanish. The server thought I could understand Spanish too, but she was mistaken. I looked at her quite perplexed, and she laughed. A woman who was behind me showed me where the restrooms were. After that, I sat on the terrace outside and enjoyed my drinks. I briefly considered booking a hotel for the night, but then waved it off again. I wondered if I would walk to Santander or stay in Somo. I didn't know yet. No, I wanted to let it come to me.
I said goodbye in the café and continued to stroll through the town on the Camino. The Camino took us out of the sweet town over a road, and then followed a path through the fields. The landscape was again gigantic, and I had to keep stopping to take photos. It looked just incredible: On the left side were scattered farms with animals and the certain scent, and on the right side the steep coast with the fresh sea breeze. It was really fantastic.
Some dreamy kilometers followed along the coast. The various flowers and grasses added to a certain atmosphere.
In some places, I couldn't even look down, it was so deep. There were also some warning signs saying that you shouldn't go too close to the edge (life-threatening).
Behind a curve, the Canadians were sitting on rocks, taking a break. We agreed that the weather today was perfect for hiking. The sun only peeked out now and then, it was pleasantly warm.
Suddenly, we could see Santander on the other side. Wow, it looked really great. Of course, a ton of photos were taken again.
The Camino continued now towards Somo, and my three Canadians opted for the paved path next to the beach. Not me... I wanted to walk the last kilometers to Somo on the sand and through the water. I said goodbye to them and wished them a good flight home. They are finishing their Camino today and flying home from Santander.
I walked barefoot along the kilometer-long beach to Somo. There were tons of surfers in the water, and I sat down in the sand and watched them.
The cloud cover was breaking up more and more, and I was sure that I would stay in Somo today. Today’s stage is not too long at 13.2 km, and I can rest a bit on the beach in the afternoon. I walked to a hotel I had already looked up online, and the lady at the reception gave me a really good price.
I spent the afternoon at the beach, and at the moment, I’m considering whether to take another rest day tomorrow or continue on. I have no idea.
I added the kilometers from my stages, and it totals 121.3 kilometers so far :-).
Best regards
