Dunedin

Published: 14.02.2020

Once again by the ocean, then I'll head northeast, always along the coast on small roads. Just before Dunedin, I'll go back to the water at Tunnel Beach, where the Pacific has shaped round rocks and arches out of the soft limestone. The last part is a tunnel carved into the stone, with about 40 steps leading down to the beach. Back on the route, I notice a helicopter distributing fertilizer and effortlessly handling the container, dropping it precisely next to the excavator. Really impressive... The city of Dunedin doesn't appeal to me so much, with a lot of traffic and drizzle. I only go shopping and refuel. But there is one thing I still want to see: Baldwin Street, the steepest residential street in the world with a gradient of 35% (1m rise every 2.86m). Pretty crazy... With the wet road, I won't even attempt to drive up there... Risk minimization... In Moeraki, I take a walk on the beach again to see the boulders, roughly round-shaped limestone rocks. They could be marbles, just bigger... I also cross the Waitaki River, which has relatively little water in a huge riverbed, and then it's the end of the day.
