These are pictures of Mauna Loa, the active volcano in Hawaii. Lichens and then grasses grow on the lava, and this is how the lush vegetation begins on fertile soil in Hawaii.
Now we are on Big Island. The first day was dedicated to plants, we visited a huge botanical garden. We were amazed.
