Day 7 - Melbourne to Cowes

This morning we left Melbourne for Philip Island / Cowes.

When we picked up the vehicle, we were surprised why a large amount of data had to be entered manually again, even though so much was already requested when booking the vehicle.

The drive out of Melbourne was a bit tricky because of all the construction sites, but we mastered it well as a team. One steers the vehicle through left-hand traffic, steering wheel on the right - the other navigates.

The journey through rural areas took about 2 hours. We discovered an Aldi straight away in Cowes. In the late afternoon we set out to watch the famous penguin parade at sunset. The start of the holidays in the state of Victoria meant that many people were out and about. On the drive along the coast we saw signs like “Koala crossing”, “Kangaroo crossing” and actually suddenly a kangaroo wanted to cross the road, so we almost ran over our first kangaroo in Australia. Braked sharply and rushed past the animal's nose - leaving no traces of blood on the car - phew.

After we were cold from the wind - despite our jackets - by the sea, we tried to get something to eat. However, the restaurants close their kitchens at 9 p.m., so with a little goodwill from the Aussies we were able to order something at 8:45 p.m. and eat in peace.

We left our accommodation - a lovely guesthouse with 1950s charm, lovingly run by Simonne and her little dog Max - the next morning towards Lorn (Great Ocean Road).
