25.01.2023 from Aberfeldy River Camping to 7 Miles Flat Creek in Alpine NP
Animals didn't visit us yesterday, but we did see some stars, it was pitch dark and very quiet.
We pack up and leave early again, just yesterday I thought that two cars would have a hard time passing each other on the narrow roads, today there are even two on the road, a jeep and a mini excavator, and it's no problem to pass each other, even from the passenger's perspective. We visit Walhalla, a historic place that once caused a sensation with a gold mine. In 1911, the production had to be stopped, the mine was exhausted and soon the hotels and pubs also disappeared. Today, the community knows how to market the historic site well for tourists, there is a campsite, some hotels, and a railway for tourists. We visit the old machines, walk a circular path, and continue driving.
Today we have a longer tour ahead of us, mostly on unpaved roads, a lot in the mountains, which means uphill and downhill again, on roads that wind along the mountain. You can't drive fast, there are constantly potholes and the infamous washboard track, especially in the curves.
In one of the few places along the route, we stop for coffee at the general store, a 20 m² store with a few basic groceries, as well as fresh produce and beer. There was also a gold rush here, there were also many hotels and pubs, but now there's nothing going on anymore.
A few kilometers further, there is a relatively weak WIFI, it's enough for some pictures and voice messages.
Our destination today is the 7 Miles Flat campground in Alpine NP. In the meantime, we are a bit worried because campers are already everywhere on the rivers and have taken up space. Will we find a spot? But of course, our spot is right by the river, with other campers on the left and right at a sufficient distance. We immediately go for a swim in the river, the water is relatively cold but very refreshing, we settle in and prepare dinner later. The fire is already burning, but we won't hope for kangaroos, there are too many people with music here.
