Travel Diary – Weekly Recap of the BNI Global Convention (Sydney, Australia)
A week that expanded my network, my thinking, and my heart
What an extraordinary week in Sydney. The BNI Global Convention was much more than a business event. It was a week full of human encounters, cultural bridges, new opportunities, and the realization of how valuable genuine international networking is.
1. Strong Conversations from the First Moment On
Right from the first morning, exceptionally good conversations emerged.
I was particularly pleased that Dr. Joachim Bender (SolyPlus GmbH) immediately provided feedback and our international collaboration worked right away.
We are still looking for an investor or a strong partner in the cosmetics and medical beauty industry, and the first signals this week were promising.
2. A Moment of True Humanity: Vietnam
A particularly touching experience was my encounter with a young woman from Vietnam.
She was sitting alone, barely understood English, and her translation functions were not working.
I set up a simultaneous translation between Vietnamese and German with her – and suddenly, uncertainty turned into a real conversation.
Then it turned out:
She has 150,000 followers and works in the beauty industry.
Since WhatsApp is not used by her, we established contact through Facebook.
She said later:
“You made me happy.”
A moment that will remain deeply ingrained.
3. Medicine, Beauty, Science – New Doors Are Opening
Throughout the week, many more conversations took place:
- An entrepreneur from Hong Kong, operator of a large medical and beauty center – very similar to SolyPlus.
- An Asian business professor, excellently networked in pharmaceuticals and medical technology.
- A Polish BNI director with a large franchise area – interested in our cosmetics and wound healing products.
- A Taiwanese entrepreneur from one of the largest honey productions in the country – interesting, even though there was no business fit.
- Another representative from a traditional Taiwanese company.
Every conversation was valuable, deep, and content-rich.
4. Language Barriers? Not in Sydney
The encounters with the Spanish BNI leadership team were particularly impressive.
Several spoke hardly any English.
I showed them – just like I did with the Vietnamese woman – the possibility of a live translation.
German ↔ Spanish in real-time.
The enthusiasm was enormous, and the wonder was genuine.
That is international communication.
Meanwhile, I was already receiving initial feedback from Germany on contacts that I had forwarded.
5. A Personal Highlight: My Conversation with Dr. Ivan Meisner
The moment I had been looking forward to came in the evening:
A photo and a conversation with Dr. Ivan Meisner, the founder of BNI.
During the photo session, I asked him about a team contact to Richard Branson.
He directly said no. That was fine with me.
But then he held me back and explained why:
- Visibility: “Ralph, we don’t know each other at all.”
- Credibility: “How can I trust you? We don’t have a shared history.”
That was honest, clear, and extremely valuable.
Later – in a conversation with Steffen, an ED from Germany – the idea arose that the path might lead through Kevin Barber and the BNI Foundation.
I have been involved in Germany for years in educating children – something that Dr. Meisner does not know.
Maybe that is the way to build trust.
6. Small Encounters, Big Impact
Andy – the Australian colleague with heart
On the way back, I was glad to have my Australian colleague Andy, who sent me a whole list of ideas for my next travel destinations in Australia and New Zealand.
Genuine international helpfulness – greatly appreciated.
The Pakistani medical student in the taxi
On the ride home, I had a young taxi driver from Pakistan who studies medicine.
Of course, I told him about our wound healing product and cosmetics.
We exchanged contacts.
The funny thing was:
I showed him how he could communicate with me in Urdu – through translation.
He was enthusiastic. And I – the “older gentleman” – showed him how modern technology works.
A cheerful, pleasant moment.
7. Today – the Last Day of Conversations
Until 2:30 PM, I was able to network intensively once again.
Again many high-quality conversations, very positive impressions.
Will business come from this? It’s too early to say.
But the feeling is good – and sometimes that is the beginning of everything.
8. A Very Personal Highlight: Reuniting with Mary
This morning I recognized Mary again – and was genuinely pleased to see her.
She combines professionalism with warmth, clarity with true kindness.
Every conversation with her remains memorable.
And yes – I haven’t forgotten the moment with the red clown nose, of course.
Such moments last.
A heartfelt thank you to Mary:
for her work, her attitude, and the special way she engages with people.
Conclusion: A Week of Global Connections
This week was not an exchange of business cards.
It was:
- Building bridges between cultures
- Building trust
- Opening doors
- Living humanity
- Networking on a new level
- Learning, inspiring, persevering
Sydney gifted me experiences that go far beyond this trip.
Professionally.
Personally.
Humanly.
The BNI Glow Convention 2025 was not just an event.
It was a catalyst for what’s coming next.
