A beautiful and relaxing afternoon on Waiheke is behind us, and today I have the route from Auckland via Waitomo to Rotorua planned.

The day starts early: At 6:30 AM, I have breakfast at the Coffee Club before we set off by bus at 7:55 AM. There will be several small stops along the way, but

the highlight at noon is the Spellbound Glowworm Tour in the Waitomo Caves – a place that fascinates me time and time again.

In the late afternoon, we reach Rotorua, check in at the hotel, and later have the opportunity to dine together at Urban Gusto. For this day, I intentionally chose weatherproof and practical clothing: a warm layer for the caves, a rain jacket at the ready, plus a water bottle, sunscreen, and sturdy footwear. In Rotorua, I also look forward to the spa offerings and the vibrant restaurant scene, which nicely rounds off the evening.

James' story on the bus ride

As we traveled by bus through the hills of New Zealand, James shared one of those stories that can only arise here: a mix of national pride, humor, and the typical New Zealand understatement. He showed us a picture that seems absurd at first glance – a Kiwi aiming at a silver fern with laser eyes.

To outsiders, this may appear as an insider joke. Yet for New Zealand, it reflects a piece of identity. The Kiwi, actually a shy, flightless bird, is humorously elevated to superhero status. Not because it is strong, but precisely because it is not. Exaggeration meets self-irony.

The silver fern – a symbol of national strength and sporting excellence – stands opposite this fictional laser beam. No conflict, rather a wink: two icons that meet in a graphic meme, illustrating how New Zealand sees itself – proud, playful, and never too serious.

James' story was simple yet poignant:
