You already look a bit strained in the New York subway. Until then, everything was actually easy. A half-hour train ride, eight-hour flight with two meals and four movies. Ninety minutes of passport control where you felt like you came from the immigration ship. An hour bus ride to Grand Central, but then....
Escalators? Secret! Elevators? Absent or instruments of torture. But lots of nice New Yorkers with a lot of local knowledge, which they can hardly make understandable. Every time complete apathy could be seen in our faces, a wide grin and the litany from the beginning. 'Take that 5 to Essex and then change for M to Brooklyn...'
What is surprising? The heat and how everything works anyway. The hotel? A definitive 'Oh well'. The breakfast? A definitive 'Oh no!' Lots of plastic and not everything is thrown away. New York, here we come!
