Can Tho - The City on the Mekong

The journey to Can Tho in the Mekong Delta took us along many rice fields and coconut palm plantations. Since we set off quite early this morning, our eyes in the car were more closed than open.

We made two stops on our way south, where we were each taken in a small boat through the side arms of the Mekong. Here, a bit of Spreewald atmosphere emerged. Sure, there were a few monkeys and bird species to be seen, but otherwise, the rides were rather uncomfortable and not spectacular enough to say much about.

The Bamboo Eco Village, our accommodation for the next two nights, is a nice place located right by the river. The small bamboo huts are simply furnished but still quite comfortable. The green surroundings, the river at our doorstep, and plenty of geckos and swarms of mosquitoes give us more of a nature feeling than we would actually like.

We decided to end the evening in Can Tho, the largest city in the region. The city's night market offered everything you don't need to buy, along with the now familiar foods from sweet to savory. We pushed our way through the crowds and then decided to leave the scene. On our way out of the crowd, we did spot something amusing. While just a few days ago a dog was hanging grilled to perfection, today we saw two four-legged friends who were treated to an exaggerated portion of unnecessary 'affection.' Additionally, it's worth mentioning that here too, the traffic has its own special flavor. It's always surprising how entire families with luggage, pets, and all are traveling on the many scooters. However, it's somewhat incomprehensible how people transport their children on the two-wheelers. Ready for bed, standing up, and unfortunately almost always without a helmet, while Mom and Dad pay attention to their heads.

We'll see what the coming days bring. As of now, the city is at the end of our travel destinations this year.
