Tag 121 - Already plans for Easter?

Published: 05.03.2018

It's unbelievable how exhausted I am every evening. It's not even 9:00 pm yet and I just dropped the book on my nose. My biggest achievement today was swimming about 30 laps in the pool. I guess it's the heat. If I go to sleep now, I'll already be awake at 5:00 am tomorrow morning.

The plans for Easter week are taking shape. Yesterday, Sarah and I booked a hostel in Somoto. Sarah is also a volunteer at Education Plus and could easily be my daughter.

Somoto is located in the north of Nicaragua, about 20 kilometers from the Honduran border. It used to be a sleepy little town - known only for its many donkeys and the rosquillas (small, stone-hard, donut-like cornmeal rings), a specialty in Nicaragua. If it weren't for two Czech scientists stumbling upon the Somoto Canyon in 2003, which is a crack in the uneven clay outside the town. The locals had always known about the 75 million-year-old canyon. This is where the Rio Coco originates, which winds its way to the Caribbean.

The canyon is also our main destination. And I hope Somoto is still sleepy and only the destination for hardcore tourists like us who are not deterred by the relatively long journey.

Weather is known.
