Day 24: On the hunt for the crocodiles

Published: 25.07.2024

After breakfast, we first headed to the Burrungkuy Walk. This led us past rock paintings of the Aborigines.

At the end, there was a short ascent to the Kunwarddewardde Lookout. Although it was only a short distance, with the temperature already at 30°C, it was a sweaty affair. The view compensated a little for it.

We then continued to Anbangbang Billabong. On a circular path around the waterhole, we could not only observe many water birds frolicking among the water lilies.

We also saw some kangaroos hopping around. We couldn't spot any crocodiles. Nor any buffalo, even though their tracks and droppings indicated their not too long ago presence.

As we drove off from the parking lot, a kangaroo family hopped across the road in front of us. The last stop before heading to the hotel was at the Mirray Lookout. Here too, a short trail led to a viewpoint over the Wetlands. However, it was quite hazy.
By midday, we arrived at our hotel for today, the Cooinda Lodge (By far the most expensive accommodation of the trip!). Our room was not ready yet. But we already got towels for the pool. We had lunch in the shade. The kids stayed at the pool while we drove to the Yellow Water Boardwalk. The short walk on the boardwalk led directly along the river. We also spotted several birds and two crocodiles - a large one on the shore and a small one in the water.

Upon our return, we were able to move into our bungalow.

The Yellow Water Cruise started at 4 pm. We took a boat trip through the Yellow Water Billabong and the Alligator River. Along the way, we saw not only a lot of birds but also several crocodiles in and around the water.

Unfortunately, due to the clouds, there was no great sunset. Back at the hotel, we enjoyed dinner (including Kangaroo Burger) before heading to the luckily air-conditioned room.
