2.4. Wittum Palace

We have arrived safely at Wittum Palace. Unfortunately, we were disappointed to find out once again that we cannot visit the palace. It is currently undergoing restoration, which only allows us access to the vestibule. The Wittum Palace is now only partially preserved. Even Faust must have had a fragmentary form at some point, after all, you cannot write such a work in one night, can you? We will now use the time we had planned for the palace to do our research instead. Faust is a universal drama, which means that the main characters travel from heaven through the world to hell. This new perspective was unusual for the time. The controversy between faith and passion also made the fragmentary form of Faust particularly interesting. Feelings like love and despair were described from various perspectives, allowing the reader to immerse themselves completely in the characters. The fact that Goethe did not follow a typical structure for Faust is something completely new, almost revolutionary. This structure allows for multiple climaxes, such as the pact with the devil, the murder of the child, and Gretchen's death. Goethe did not omit the scenes with witches or magic in Faust, which captures the attention. The reader is shocked by these many new elements, which are then resolved in a positive way, although it may have caused outrage for some. Whether positive or negative, Faust has already shown in its fragmentary form that it is something completely extraordinary.
