Iquitos is a world of its own: Only accessible by boat or plane, it is surrounded by jungle in the far northeast of Peru, with Brazil and Colombia not far away.
We take a mototaxi to the center and are immediately presented with extensive offers for tours and hotels. With humidity levels reaching up to 100%, an air conditioner is definitely recommended!
The city is laid out in a grid pattern. Everywhere there are a variety of shops, restaurants, and hotels. The 'promenade' along the green edge towards the Amazon is relatively relaxed. Otherwise, mototaxis and buses (which are made of wood) crowd the narrow streets, with the smell of gasoline in the air.
The market in Belen has everything one could imagine! The alleyways of animal products are almost unbearable from the smell of raw meat in the sun.
